FAQ
Do I need improv experience to take this class?
No. If you’ve never taken improv before, you’ll be supported. If you’ve taken a lot, you’ll be challenged.
Why four venues?
Grand Rapids is full of awesome spaces that yearn for more programming. We'll be getting to know some spaces that would make a great home to your future performative venture.
How big is the class?
Capped at approximately 16 students to maintain depth, safety, and individual attention.
Is this a comedy class?
Comedy happens as a by-product of this work, but it’s not the goal. We focus on truthful behavior, emotional clarity, and connection. Humor emerges naturally when people are present and responsive. If you’re tired of forcing jokes or competing onstage, this class will feel like a relief.

What kinds of people usually take this class?
Anyone can improvise. Everyone is stageworthy. I've seen the best performances come from newcomers. If you're already an actor, educator, performer, writer, director, you will experience an environment conducive to deepening your craft. Many of us do it simply because it's fun.
"I’m not sure I’ll be ‘good’ at this.”
There is no “good” here — only participation. You're either playing the game, or you're not playing it. The games are designed so success comes from embodiment, not your cultural knowledge or quick-wittedness.
“I’m introverted — will this be uncomfortable?”
Many introverted participants find the structure surprisingly supportive. The work values listening and subtlety as much as expression.
What do you mean by “improvisation as trance”?
We explore focused, embodied states of attention that allow instinct, emotion, and imagination to move freely—similar to what athletes, musicians, and actors experience in peak performance. We are exploring new ways to develop a flow state through performing.

Testimonials
“Improvisation with Bobby Phillips is a wonderfully immersive, meditative, and fun experience! His approach challenges you to open your perspective in creative and transformational ways. His classes have changed the way I view improv. Not just something to work on toward a stage performance, but something that translates into the performance of life itself.” - Genna R
“I had such an eye-opening experience. It has definitely helped me a lot in my personal growth as an actor and a person!” - Lydia C
“In a short period of time, I was able to transform into my inner child with a group of total strangers. I had a blast!” - Tommy C

Facilitator Bio
For years I performed in a weekly show in Eastown with a group called Fictional Friends. I then conducted a series of workshops at an Ecuadorian medicine center, and witnessed the power of improvisation to heal old wounds. Seeking more, I went in search of Relapse Theater, a landmark Atlanta theater. This journey introduced me to Viola Spolin, improv’s founder. I’ve since been in class with Viola’s granddaughter Aretha Sills, and taught workshops regularly at Detroit’s Planet Ant, with sessions at the DAAC, Lake Michigan College, GVSU, The Comedy Project, and Kalamazoo’s Dormouse Theatre.
